California Area School District students finish first year of See the Good! with lasting impact beyond school
California – March 28, 2025
California Area SD See the Good!, a research-based social-emotional learning (SEL) and positive education program, has entered its second year of partnership with California Area School District, deepening its strengths-based framework across middle and high school. Building on the progress made in Year 1, the renewed collaboration reflects California Area SD’s commitment to embedding a lasting culture of positivity, resilience, and self-awareness throughout its schools.
This year’s implementation takes a more expansive approach, with a central focus on strength portfolios for both teachers and students. These portfolios serve as living records of each individual’s identified strengths, how those strengths have been applied, and how they continue to develop over time. For students, the portfolio process encourages reflection and ownership of their own growth; for teachers, it deepens professional self-awareness and models the very mindset they are cultivating in their classrooms.
A key dimension of the Year 2 programme is an emphasis on how strengths extend beyond the school walls. Students are exploring how their core strengths show up in their home lives, family relationships, and everyday experiences helping to bridge the gap between school-based SEL and real-world application. This whole-person, whole-life approach reinforces the idea that positive character traits are not confined to the classroom, but are tools students carry with them everywhere.
The programme continues to integrate See the Good!’s signature characters and curriculum tools, including Strength Crow, which has proven especially engaging for younger learners. Kindergarten teacher Ms. West shared her experience with the programme firsthand:
“The students enjoy the lessons with Strength Crow, and I’m already seeing them use the strength language in their day-to-day interactions.”Ms. West, Kindergarten Teacher, California Area School District.
This kind of early strength literacy where children naturally begin naming and applying their strengths is at the heart of what See the Good! aims to achieve. When students develop this language young, it builds a foundation that supports them as they move into more reflective and portfolio-driven work in the middle and high school years.
See the Good! has already reached schools across the United States and internationally, and the continued partnership with California Area SD exemplifies the depth of impact that multi-year implementation can achieve. Research shows that sustained engagement with strengths-based SEL programmes leads to improved academic outcomes, stronger school climate, enhanced student well-being, and reduced teacher burnout.
