Socio-emotional skills and character strengths are connected

Education systems need to prepare students for their future. According to OECD (2021) preparing students with technical or academic skills alone will not be enough for them to achieve success, connectedness and well-being, whatever endeavours they wish to pursue. Social and emotional skills, such as perseverance, empathy, kindness, curiosity, courage, or leadership are central to this. 

Social and emotional skills and character strengths are today more important today than ever before. 

They refer to the ability to regulate one’s thoughts, emotions and behaviour. Social and emotional skills determine how well people adjust to their environment and how much they achieve in their lives. Social and emotional skills have been shown to influence many important life outcomes, but also to influence the development and use of cognitive skills.

The Finnish national core curriculum of basic education (OPH 2014) mentions socio-emotional skills as a central part of education. Socio-emotional skills have also been described as the skills of growing as a person and a citizen. These socio-emotional skills don’t form an independent school subject; they should be taught alongside other subjects. The implementation of the teaching varies a lot between different kindergartens and schools.

 Character strengths are basic factors when learning socio-emotional skills. When teaching character strengths, you’re also teaching socio-emotional skills and equipping children for the experience of being human and growing up.

Our experts

Kaisa Vuorinen is originally a special education teacher and a solution-focused supervisor. Her doctoral dissertation, discussing character strengths, will be examined in 2021 at the University of Helsinki. Since 2014, Kaisa has been developing practical material for positive pedagogy in pre-primary and basic education. Kaisa has also been teaching on this subject extensively abroad. 

Lotta Uusitalo is an Adjunct Professor of Special Education and a university lecturer at the University of Helsinki. Her original training was that of a biochemist.  She has twenty years of experience in class teaching, subject teaching, and special education teaching. Since 2006, she has been training teachers both in Finland and abroad. Lotta has earlier researched learning difficulties and later children’s experiences of happiness and strength pedagogy.
